Russia will not be able to economically sustain its war against Ukraine for much longer. At the same time, partners need to stop the flow of money to Moscow from oil and gas sales, which funds the Kremlin’s war machine, states German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

“It would be very strange if Russia were able to sustain this [war] for a very, very long time,” Pistorius said.

The senior official added that in order to prevent financing of the Kremlin’s war machine, the flow of money to Russia from energy exports must be stopped.

“We must stop the flow of money from gas and oil sales as quickly, completely, and finally as possible, because this is the source of funding for this terrible war - the funds that Russia needs,” said the German Defense Minister.

As reported, on February 12, following the Ramstein meeting, Germany proposed to Western allies to provide Ukraine with 35 PAC-3 missiles, which are designed for Patriot systems. These missiles are currently urgently needed by Ukraine to intercept enemy targets.

Boris Pistorius said that Berlin intends to supply Ukraine with an additional five PAC-3 interceptor missiles if partner countries provide a total of 30 PAC-3 missiles.

Due to a critical shortage of PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Patriot systems, Ukrainian launchers remained empty in January, allowing enemy ballistic missiles to strike energy infrastructure without opposition.

Pistorius is not the only European leader who doubts Russia’s ability to continue the war for much longer. For example, recently Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has strategically lost and that Ukraine will win the war.
