Pentagon is demanding that artificial intelligence developers create special versions for combat operations, with restrictions to be set exclusively by the military, Reuters reports.
According to agency sources, the Pentagon insists that leading artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, create special versions of their AI tools for the military without restrictions applied to users.
During an event at White House, Pentagon chief technology officer Emil Michael told leaders of technology companies that the military seeks to develop its own artificial intelligence models.
It is noted that the Pentagon is "moving to deploy frontier AI capabilities across all classification levels."
Many artificial intelligence companies are creating special tools for the United States Army that are usually used for military management.
Classified networks are used to perform a wide range of confidential work, which may include mission planning or weapons targeting.
How the Pentagon wants to use AI
Military officials hope to use the capabilities of artificial intelligence to synthesize information in order to speed up decision-making.
According to representatives of digital companies, although these tools are powerful, they may make mistakes and even invent information that may appear plausible at first glance. Such errors in classified networks may have deadly consequences, artificial intelligence researchers say.
Artificial intelligence in weapons
Military forces of many armies around the world are trying to use artificial intelligence tools in modern warfare, in particular in the control of unmanned vehicles, ground transport, and the identification of priority targets.
According to Ukraine's Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, increasing the autonomy of drones through artificial intelligence will eventually allow the removal of operators from the battlefield.
