Current US spending on the war with Iran is estimated at $25 billion. Most of the funds have gone toward ammunition purchases, states acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst III during a Committee hearing.
"Approximately, of this day, we're spending about $25 billion on Operation Epic Fury," he said.
According to Hurst, the bulk of that amount has been spent on ammunition. He added that part of the funding has also gone toward operations, maintenance, and equipment replacement.
He also said an additional funding request for the war with Iran will be submitted to Congress once a full cost assessment of the conflict is completed.
US–Iran war
Washington and Tehran held their first round of talks mediated by Pakistan, but failed to reach an agreement on ending the war.
According to US Vice President JD Vance, Iran is not currently ready to abandon its nuclear program.
A second round of talks had been scheduled in Islamabad, but on April 25, US President Donald Trump canceled the trip of his special envoys to Pakistan. He said there was "no point in sending them on an 18-hour flight" since Washington holds all the cards in negotiations with Iran.
Despite the lack of an official meeting, media reports say the US and Iran continue informal contacts. The countries may be closer to a potential deal than it appears, although the risk of talks collapsing and the conflict resuming remains.
Earlier, Axios reported that Iran had presented the US with a new proposal to end the war. It includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz (including lifting the US blockade), while suggesting that nuclear talks be held at a later stage.
