Patriot missile supplies in Ukraine could run out in weeks, CNN reports

American Patriot Air Defense Systems are the only way for Ukraine to protect itself from Russian ballistic missiles. However, with the suspension of military supplies from the United States, the stockpile of munitions could run out very quickly, CNN reports.
According to the outlet, after the suspension of weapon deliveries from the US, the biggest challenge for Ukraine is the potential loss of the Patriot missile defense systems, which currently have no replacement. Ukrainian military personnel told CNN that their main concern is not the reduction of frontline assistance but the lack of Patriot missiles that protect their families and loved ones in cities.
It is unclear how many missiles remain in Ukrainian arsenals or if new supplies from the US are expected, CNN reports. However, a Ukrainian official told the outlet that Kyiv’s stock of Patriot missiles could run out within weeks. Ukrainian soldiers on the front line also stated that the Patriot is a key element of defense that Ukraine cannot afford to lose.
Why Patriot systems are crucial
The Patriot systems are the "crème de la crème" of US military aid to Ukraine and play a key role in the country’s air defense system. Due to the risk of losing them, Ukrainian officials are sounding the alarm.
“This is the only system capable of dealing with Russian ballistic missiles. The risk relates to the provision of Patriots, both in terms of repairs, maintenance, and ammunition to protect Ukraine from ballistic missiles,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told CNN.
The outlet adds that there are some alternative systems, such as NASAMS and IRIS-T, which have proven effective against cruise missiles and drones. However, they cannot match the Patriots in defending against modern hypersonic and ballistic missiles. Therefore, resolving the weapons supply issue will be a key factor if Europe plans to increase its support for Ukraine.
Patriot systems
The Patriot is an anti-aircraft missile system (SAM), the primary SAM of the US Army, produced by American defense contractor Raytheon Technologies. At the core of the system is the AN/MPQ-53 Patriot radar, after which the system is named. The Patriot system is the primary high and medium-level air defense system of the US Army and a tactical medium-level air defense system. In addition to this, the Patriot has also been given the role of a missile defense system for the US Army, which is now its main mission.
It is important to note that yesterday, the White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump is halting military aid to Ukraine after a dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The US requires its partners, as well as the White House, to stay focused on achieving peace.
