UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the lack of a just peace in Ukraine could have catastrophic consequences, Sky News reports.

"It is extremely important in a moment like this that international law prevails... Otherwise, we are paving the way for chaos around the world," he said.

Russia-Ukraine talks in Türkiye

In recent days, several European leaders, along with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, agreed that a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine should begin on Monday, May 12.

However, during the night of May 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected the proposal to establish a ceasefire. Instead, he announced that Russia is ready to resume negotiations with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul.

Zelenskyy, in turn, confirmed Ukraine's readiness to engage in dialogue with Russia, but added that a meeting would only be possible after a ceasefire is established on the front line.

Later, Türkiye stated that it is ready to take on the role of mediator in the planned meeting.

Trump's special envoy, Keith Kellogg, previously said that negotiations would only become possible after a ceasefire is implemented.
