Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has urged citizens to support his Fidesz party in the 2026 parliamentary elections, saying this is necessary to ensure that the country "does not get dragged into a war," according to a statement by the Hungarian prime minister on his Facebook page.
Orbán, who has expressed pro-Russian views, believes that the "liberal world order is collapsing," and said that the election of Donald Trump as US president dealt it a "fatal blow," apparently hinting at events in Venezuela.
The prime minister said that a new global order is only taking shape, and therefore the coming years will be "more unstable, unpredictable, and dangerous."
"In this situation, the Hungarian people must choose a path in April this year," he wrote.
In this context, Orbán criticized the opposition Tisza party, saying it would allegedly choose a "Brussels dead end" and agree to EU demands, including those related to the war, funding for Ukraine, migration, and gender policy.
Instead, according to Orbán, his Fidesz party offers a "path of peace and security."
"We do not want to send Hungarian youth to the front, and we do not want to destroy the country and the Hungarian economy. We have a plan and the intention to make Hungary a winner of the historical era ahead of us. To do this, first and foremost, we must stay out of the war. That is why we are asking the Hungarian people to grant us a mandate in 2026," the politician said.
Orbán systematically stokes fears of war
The Hungarian prime minister has repeatedly used fear-mongering war rhetoric.
Recently, in an interview with a pro-government Hungarian newspaper, the politician said he does not rule out the possibility of a "war in Europe" in 2026, claiming that he is allegedly trying to "prevent" such a scenario.
Earlier, Orbán stated that the outcome of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country would determine whether Budapest goes to war with Russia.
He has also warned Hungarians about war and a "mafia" in connection with Ukraine’s possible accession to the European Union.
According to Orbán, Ukraine’s EU membership allegedly poses the greatest threat to Hungary.
