Orbán's party ally chosen as Hungary's new President by Parliament
The Parliament of Hungary has elected the head of the Constitutional Court, Tamás Sulyok, as the country's new president. He is a member of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, according to Telex.
134 Hungarian deputies voted "for" Shulyok's appointment as president, and five voted "against." There were no abstentions.
Shulyok has already taken the oath. He will take office in eight days - on March 5. Until then, the temporary duties of the president will be performed by the speaker of parliament, László Kövér.
Tamás Shulyok was born in 1956. He has a legal education.
From 2000 to 2014, he served as the honorary consul of Hungary in Austria.
Since 2014, Shulyok has been a member of the country's constitutional court, and in 2016, he became its head.
Novak's resignation
On Saturday, February 10, the President of Hungary, Katalin Novak, announced her resignation.
This happened after she pardoned a convicted person in a case of pedophilia.
