Hungary does not want to be in the same union with Ukraine. Budapest fears that otherwise it will "share Ukraine’s fate", according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Orbán stated that for a new country to join the European Union, all 27 member states must agree. He added that Hungarians "do not need to care about what the other 26 countries say."

"Hungarians do not want to be in the European Union together with Ukrainians. I fully agree with this, because if you are in a union system with someone, you share their fate," the Hungarian Prime Minister said.

He remarked that Hungarians’ fate is "much easier than that of Ukrainians," and therefore there is no reason to "take on someone else’s burden and suffering."

"We feel sorry for them, we sympathize, they are fighting heroically – let’s support them, but we do not want to share a common fate with them. Their fate is to live next to Russia and constantly be in conflict with the Russians, we cannot change that. And it is not real help if we take upon ourselves everything they are suffering from," Orbán added.

He believes that a strategic agreement should be concluded with Ukraine, similar to those the EU has with the UK and Türkiye.

Orbán against Ukraine in the EU

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly opposed Ukraine’s EU accession. Budapest is currently blocking the start of accession talks.

Just yesterday, on October 2, he complained that if Ukraine joined the EU, war would enter the bloc.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that no one can block Ukraine’s path to EU membership.
