A vacuum cleaner remains one of the most popular household appliances, but it is also the one most often forgotten when it comes to thorough cleaning. Over time, this affects its performance and the quality of cleaning in the home, according to Southern Living.

Why you should clean your vacuum regularly

Following these five simple steps a few times a year will ensure smooth operation and good airflow.

You may need to clean your vacuum monthly or even every two weeks if you use it frequently or have pets.

Inspect the appliance

Check the brush roller and see if hair or threads are wrapped around it or stuck in it. If so, clean it.

For stubborn debris, you may need a screwdriver to remove the roller and clear out the tangled material.

Don’t forget the filters

Clean or replace filters according to the instructions. If you wash them, make sure they dry completely before reinserting them into the vacuum.

Wipe it down

Using a damp cloth or paper towel, gently wipe the outside of the vacuum to remove dust and dirt. An old toothbrush can help clean small crevices.

Then carefully shake the hose over a trash bin to remove any debris trapped inside.

Signs that something is wrong with your vacuum

Poor suction power

The vacuum may start picking up dust and debris less effectively, leaving dirt on the floor or requiring multiple passes over the same area.
This is often caused by a clogged filter, a full bag or container, or a blocked hose or nozzle.

Unusual operating noises

Whistling, humming, rattling, or suddenly increased noise can signal a problem. This may be caused by foreign objects in the hose or brush, worn parts, or motor issues.

Overheating and automatic shutdown

If the vacuum runs briefly and then turns off by itself, and the body becomes very hot, this often indicates poor airflow due to clogged filters or motor overload.

Dust returning to the air

If dust is still visible in the air after cleaning, the filter may be damaged or improperly installed.
