Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia and impose sanctions on the state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

The statement was made on the anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster.

According to Nausėda, decades after the catastrophe, the world is once again facing risks linked to the use of nuclear energy.

"From Zaporizhzhia to Chornobyl and Astravets, Russia is weaponizing nuclear energy - through occupation, attacks, and damage to nuclear facilities," he emphasized.

Nausėda called for decisive international action, stressing that the world must not allow such disasters to happen again.

"Stronger international action is urgently needed. We must not allow history to repeat itself. Sanction Rosatom," he concluded.

Recall that earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that due to strikes on the energy system, Ukrainian nuclear power plants are forced to operate under critical conditions, sometimes reducing output or shutting down reactor units. Russian drones have also been detected flying over plant sites.

According to him, this creates a risk of a nuclear incident for Europe, which is why Ukraine has repeatedly called for stronger sanctions against Rosatom and reinforced air defense to protect energy infrastructure.
