Ombudsman criticized UN and Red Cross response to Russian war crimes
Ukraine handed over to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations a verified video recording that showed Ukrainian prisoners of war being used as human shields on the contact line. However, international institutions ignored the information, states Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.
According to the ombudsman, the Ukrainian side managed to establish that the footage was not edited, and the video was real. It is also clear where and by whom it was recorded.
"We even have a preliminary guess as to which of the Russian Armed Forces servicemen committed this crime," Lubinets said.
At the same time, there has been no reaction from the Red Cross and the UN, despite the blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions by the Russian invaders, which was recorded in the footage.
The ombudsman noted that such disregard by the UN and the ICRC of the facts of war crimes committed by Russian troops in Ukraine has recently become systematic.
"Again we report war crimes, and again there is no reaction," Lubinets said.
Russian war crimes in Ukraine
Earlier in December, the use of Ukrainian prisoners of war as human shields on the contact line in the Zaporizhzhia region was recorded on video. The media circulated footage of Russians leading captured unarmed Ukrainian soldiers at gunpoint toward Ukrainian positions and hiding behind them.
An investigation was launched into the violation of the laws and customs of war.
This is not the first time that the aggressor country has grossly violated international humanitarian law on the treatment of prisoners of war.
Earlier, a video of two Ukrainian soldiers surrendering in the Avdiivka sector was posted online. A group of Russian occupiers shot unarmed Ukrainian servicemen.
On December 27, the Prosecutor General's Office also launched an investigation into the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners of war by the Russian occupiers near Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
On March 6, a video posted by the Russian occupiers stirred up the web. The invaders filmed the execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war after he said "Glory to Ukraine".
