Leftover food is usually not thrown away, but nutritionist Harini Bala named three foods that should never be reheated due to health risks.

Which 3 foods should not be reheated?

Spinach

According to nutritionist Harini Bala, spinach contains nitrates, the levels of which increase during boiling.

At high temperatures, for example, when reheating leafy greens, nitrates turn into nitrites, a compound associated with cancer.

"Please do not reheat your spinach, eat it immediately as soon as you cook it," said the nutritionist.

She pointed out that compounds in reheated vegetables may be toxic.

Tea

When reheated, the antioxidant properties of tea break down, and the level of tannins, which contribute to the bitter taste, increases. Bala also claims that any dormant bacteria in the tea become active upon reheating, creating a health risk for consumers.

Rice

The expert explained that harmful bacteria develop in cooled rice.

"But if you cook rice in the morning and store it in the refrigerator overnight to eat the next day, there is a huge possibility of Bacillus cereus forming there," she said.

Bacillus cereus is a type of bacteria that typically affects starchy foods and causes food poisoning, often referred to as "fried rice syndrome," a serious illness that in rare cases can lead to death.
