On Friday, May 2, a massive blackout occurred on the island of Bali due to damage to an undersea cable that transmits electricity from Java, Reuters reports.

According to the Perusahaan Listrik Negara state-owned company, the outage occurred on Friday at 4:00 p.m. local time. Power cuts were also reported at the island’s airport, but its operations continued thanks to backup generators.

The blackout also caused traffic lights to stop working, leading to traffic jams on the streets. As of now, the traffic light system has been restored to normal.

Power supply issues were also reported at the Bali Police Headquarters, as well as in district offices and local police stations. Law enforcement had to operate using generators.

According to media reports, the outage was caused by damage to undersea cables that connect Bali’s power grid with the island of Java, leading to electricity cuts in several parts of Bali.

It’s worth noting that Bali is Indonesia’s main tourist hub. Last year, the island was visited by 6.3 million foreign tourists.

Blackout in Europe

On Monday, April 28, several European countries, including Spain, France, and Portugal, experienced a massive blackout. Millions of people were left without electricity, causing major disruptions to transportation, communications, businesses, and critical infrastructure.

According to media reports, power restoration in Spain could take between 6 and 10 hours, and a state of emergency was declared in the country due to the situation.

The cause of the power outages remains unclear. Portugal’s national electricity company, REN, suggested that wildfires in southwestern France may have damaged a crucial power line between Perpignan and Narbonne, leading to disruptions in the power grid.

In recent days, Spain’s National Court announced the launch of an official investigation into the large-scale power outage that occurred last Monday.
