Norway to allocate nearly €120 million for another Patriot for Ukraine
Norway, alongside other allies, will allocate around €120 million to Ukraine, funds required for Ukraine to receive another Patriot system from Romania, according to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
He said that Norway is providing 1.4 billion Norwegian kroner, roughly €120 million, for a project through which allies will finance Romania’s provision of an additional Patriot system to Ukraine. Germany and the United States are also involved in the project.
"Russia’s attacks are continuing unabated, and Ukraine needs more air defense to protect the civilian population. Providing air defense to Ukraine is a priority area for Norway, and I am very pleased that we can help Ukraine to acquire a new Patriot air defense system," Støre said.
The Norwegian government also reminded that 4 billion kroner had previously been allocated to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses, with funds directed toward purchasing Patriot interceptor missiles, an IRIS-T battery, and repairing existing air defense systems.
Patriot for Ukraine
Romania announced its intent to transfer a Patriot system to Ukraine on June 20, but due to parliamentary and government approvals, delivery was delayed until September 3.
President Klaus Iohannis approved the final decision on September 5. Notably, the Patriot system is crucial for Ukraine to enhance its air defenses against ballistic missiles.
Another Patriot system will be provided to Ukraine by the Netherlands, along with an additional country that has chosen to remain anonymous.
