Norway is providing 5 billion kroner for the purchase of artillery shells for Ukraine. Part of the funds will be allocated through the Czech initiative, and the rest through the mechanisms of the European Peace Facility, according to a statement from the Norwegian government.

According to the Norwegian government, Norway is allocating 4 billion kroner (over 332 million euros) in grants to support the Czech initiative for purchasing artillery ammunition for Ukraine in 2025. The grant will go toward acquiring large-caliber shells that Czechia is sourcing globally. Norway had already contributed to this initiative in 2024.

“Artillery shells are vital for Ukraine’s fight to liberate itself from Russian occupation. That’s why it is important for Norway to help replenish Ukraine’s ammunition stockpiles,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

In addition, Norway will contribute 1 billion kroner to the European Peace Facility (EPF), a financial mechanism through which the EU provides support to Ukraine, including artillery shells, air defense systems, and procurement of products from Ukraine’s defense industry. The Norwegian contribution will be used specifically for ammunition.

“The EU and Norway are working closely and effectively together on military support for Ukraine. Both the contribution to the EPF and our joint backing of the Czech initiative are further proof that Europe stands with Ukraine,” Støre emphasized.

Previously, Norway supported the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine and cooperated with other Northern European countries on joint procurement. It has also delivered shells from its military stockpiles and shared technology with Ukraine to help establish licensed production of such ammunition directly on Ukrainian territory.

Norway’s support for Ukraine

Since the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Norway has been actively supporting Kyiv, providing military, financial, and humanitarian assistance.

Over this period, Ukraine has received air defense systems, artillery, armored vehicles, and missiles from Norway. The country also finances weapons procurement through international funds and contributes to strengthening Ukraine’s energy system by supplying equipment and allocating funds for its restoration following Russian attacks.

Recently, the Norwegian prime minister announced that Norway will provide Ukraine with €3.5 billion in 2025 to support its needs.

On April 4, the Norwegian government also approved an increase in its support package for Ukraine from 35 billion kroner to 85 billion kroner (approximately $7.8 billion).
