On Saturday, January 4, North Korea conducted a hypersonic missile test, overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to Bloomberg.

The report states that Kim Jong Un emphasized the need to further improve the country’s offensive weapons systems and overall nuclear deterrent.

Bloomberg notes that the North Korean leader typically personally supervises weapons tests that he considers significant.

It is also reported that the test took place ahead of a summit scheduled for Monday between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk Yeol.

North Korea's missile tests

On Wednesday, December 24, Kim Jong Un oversaw a test launch of long-range surface-to-air missiles, which media reports said successfully destroyed targets in the air at a distance of 200 km.

Additionally, on December 29, North Korea conducted a launch of long-range strategic cruise missiles, also personally observed by Kim Jong Un.

Earlier on the morning of January 4, North Korea carried out its first missile launches of the year toward the Sea of Japan. The missiles reportedly landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
