North Korea's Foreign Ministry stated that the issue of denuclearization is considered finally closed. The ministry also condemned recent nuclear deterrence talks between the US and South Korea, according to Reuters.
"The U.S. and its vassal forces' meaningless rhetoric against the DPRK and cooperation in posing a nuclear threat to it can never affect the irreversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state," the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It added that the issue of denuclearization is definitely closed. That is — the DPRK will remain a nuclear‑armed country.
Reuters notes that last week, US and South Korean officials discussed strengthening nuclear deterrence and readiness to counter North Korea's growing weapons program.
North Korea's buildup
A week ago, Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korea's leader, stated that North Korea will never abandon its status as a nuclear state. She warned that the country will not tolerate any threats.
Also, the day before that, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that the DPRK's naval forces must become a key element of nuclear deterrence. He emphasized that the fleet must be integrated into the country's overall doctrine.
In addition, the media reported that North Korea has amended its constitution. The new provision provides for an automatic nuclear strike if Kim Jong-un is killed by an attack from another state.
