North Korea can receive nuclear technology from Russia in exchange for soldiers - Seoul's representative at UN
Russia may compensate North Korea for its military support in the war against Ukraine with nuclear weapons technologies, according to South Korea's permanent representative to the UN, Hwang Joon-kook.
“North Korea expects generous payment from Moscow for its military involvement. This could include both financial and military assistance, as well as technologies related to nuclear weapons,” Hwang stated.
He suggested that Pyongyang may soon become an active participant in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The South Korean ambassador urged Russia to immediately withdraw all its troops from Ukraine, emphasizing that lasting peace in Ukraine can only be achieved under the UN Charter and international law.
According to Ukrainian military intelligence, around 11,000 North Korean infantrymen are undergoing training in eastern Russia to be sent to fight against Ukraine, and they are expected to begin combat in November.
Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, has reached out to partners for assistance.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that this reflects the level of desperation among Russian leaders.
NATO officials do not rule out the possibility that North Korean soldiers could end up on the battlefield in Ukraine, though the alliance currently has no confirmation of their involvement.
Mike Turner, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, urged US President Joe Biden to recognize the deployment of North Korean troops against Ukraine as a red line for the US and NATO.
