In New York on Saturday, January 24, the bodies of three people were found on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Their deaths are preliminarily linked to the sudden cold snap, according to the New York Daily News.

The victims include a 67-year-old man, a 64-year-old woman, and another man whose identity has not yet been established. All of the deceased were homeless, and no visible signs of violent death were recorded on their bodies.

Police noted that the final cause of death for each victim must be determined by a forensic examination.

According to meteorologists, on the night from Friday to Saturday, the air temperature in New York dropped to minus 12 degrees, and strong winds significantly increased the feeling of cold.

It is expected that on Sunday the city will experience heavy snowfall, up to 30 cm. Below-zero temperatures are forecast to continue throughout the week.

Due to dangerous weather conditions, a Code Blue extreme cold alert has been declared in New York, posing a particular threat to people without permanent housing.

City authorities reported that mobile aid teams will operate on the streets, directing homeless people to temporary shelters.

According to analysts, approximately 2,500–3,500 Americans die each year from hypothermia and cold exposure. For example, in 2023, there were about 2,520 cases, and in 2022, up to 3,500 cases occurred during severe winter cold across the U.S.

In Ukraine, there have also been recorded deaths from hypothermia during severe frosts. For example, in 2012, when the winter was extremely harsh, 20 people died in just one day, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Later, there were also fatal cases due to bad weather — in 2017, 40 people in Ukraine died from hypothermia and frostbite.

Regarding official statistics on deaths from hypothermia in recent years, they are not available. However, it is known that from December 2025 to January 2026, over 1,100 Ukrainians sought medical help for frostbite and hypothermia, and more than 1,000 patients required hospitalization due to cold and frost-related injuries.
