New Russia sanctions bill set for introduction in US Congress

American senators will propose that Congress strengthen sanctions pressure on Russia. They have prepared the relevant bill, reports the Financial Times.
According to the publication, the bill will significantly expand US sanctions against the shadow fleet of oil tankers that Russia uses to circumvent Western sanctions in the energy sector.
The document is also aimed at Russia's LNG production projects and provides for the expansion of sanctions against the defense-industrial complex of the aggressor country.
The shadow fleet bill is planned to be introduced to Congress by Republican Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Jeanne Shaheen, the committee's leading Democrat.
"Putin will do everything he can to circumvent US sanctions, and the US is cracking down hard on the illegal shadow fleet," Risch said.
He added that Russia's shadow fleet tankers directly threaten the security of the US and Europe.
According to the FT, the bill is supported by senators from both parties, as well as Trump allies Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. In the Senate, there is strong support for the idea of forcing Moscow to face more serious consequences for the war in Ukraine.
Graham's bill
This year, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced a bill on devastating sanctions against Russia.
In particular, the document provides for the introduction of 500% tariffs against those countries that buy from Russia.
The document is supported by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Still, it has not been put to a vote because US President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision regarding sanctions against Russia.
