In Germany, the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union bloc (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) have agreed to form a coalition government, NTV reports.

According to the outlet, the agreement between the parties paves the way for the formation of a new German government.

"Five weeks after the federal election, CDU/CSU and SPD have agreed on a coalition deal," NTV writes.

According to the media, both sides are still discussing some minor details. CDU/CSU and SPD plan to announce the results of their coalition talks on Wednesday, April 9, at 12:00 p.m. local time.

It’s worth noting that CDU leader Friedrich Merz had aimed to form a government by Easter, April 20. However, the Bundestag is now considering May 6 as the date for his election as chancellor.

On February 23, 2025, Germany held snap elections to the Bundestag.

According to the vote count, the CDU/CSU came in first, the AfD party placed second, and the SPD came third. For the Social Democrats, this was the worst result in the federal elections to date.
