According to Finnish media, the cable broke in the Baltic Sea near the island of Gotland. Swedish Coast Guard confirmed this information, stating that the break likely happened in Sweden's exclusive economic zone.

Swedish Prime Minister mentioned on social media that they are aware of the problem and are "taking the information regarding the possible damage very seriously".

The exact timing of the break is still unknown, but authorities were informed about the incident on the previous day.

It is believed that the damaged cable is the C-Lion1 undersea fiber-optic link owned by the Cinia Oy company.

Investigation of incident

Reuters reports that the Swedish Coast Guard is investigating the possible damage to the cable off the country’s southwestern coast in the Baltic Sea.

"We received information about a suspicious cable damage, and the prosecution has decided to start a preliminary investigation," Reuters quotes the Coast Guard spokesperson.

The Swedish prosecution has also begun a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Damage to underwater cables

The C-Lion1 cable was put into operation in 2016. This same cable was last damaged in November 2024. It is the only Finnish underwater cable that directly connects Finland to Central Europe.

At the same time, another damaged underwater communications cable was discovered between Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea.

In December of last year, news emerged about damage to the Estlink 2 underwater cable, which connects Finland and Estonia. Finland later suggested that the damage to the underwater power line in the Gulf of Finland might have been intentional. Two vessels were spotted in the area at the time.
