NATO sees no military threat to Moldova from Russia
NATO believes that Russia does not pose a military threat to Moldova, as "Ukraine is doing a good job," according to NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană.
"I want to reiterate, being here in Chisinau, that we do not see a military threat to Moldova from Russia. The reason is simple: Ukraine is doing a very good job with our support, so there is no risk," NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Joane said.
However, Geoană also said that this does not imply that Russia has ceased discussing the use of hybrid warfare tactics against Moldova. He mentioned energy pressure, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns as ongoing concerns.
Backstory
Russian forces continue to illegally station themselves in the Transnistrian region of Moldova. Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the aggressor nation has sought to establish a land corridor through this region for its strategic interests, but it has not succeeded.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has stated that her country is at a critical juncture that will shape its future. Despite the threats from Russia, Moldova remains committed to providing assistance to Ukraine.
NATO's assessment suggests that Moldova currently faces no direct military threat from Russia, mainly due to the effective efforts undertaken by Ukraine with NATO's support. However, concerns persist regarding Russia's use of hybrid warfare tactics, including energy pressure, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns, against Moldova.
