NATO opens airborne operations center in northern Norway - Newsweek
Norway has established an airborne operations center as part of its latest move to strengthen NATO operations along its border with Russia in the Arctic. The center will provide military training, reports Newsweek.
According to Newsweek, the center was established in Sørreisa in the northern part of the country. It will provide training for airborne troops from British, American, and Dutch personnel.
Norway does not have its airborne forces, but some of its key army units and special forces are based in the region.
“We have to train together in order to protect Norway, the Nordic region and NATO in crisis and war,” said the head of Norway's Ministry of Defense during a visit to the facility.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Norway has increased investments in military infrastructure, spending around $1.44 billion on bases in the city of Tromsø alone.
In September, Politico reported that the US has been steadily increasing its naval presence near Alaska. These actions have taken place amid rising tensions due to the intensification of military activity by Russia and China.
