Declassified US documents contain a reference to a mysterious event in Brazil in 1963. American officials investigated reports of a metal sphere that had allegedly fallen from the sky, with the body of an unknown pilot reportedly found inside, according to the Daily Mail.
Radio broadcast, State Department involvement and NASA
The story began on November 8, 1963, with a broadcast on Portuguese-language Radio Tupi in Rio de Janeiro.
The report claimed that a large metal sphere had fallen in the center of the municipality of Conde, Bahia state, leaving a crater about 4 meters deep.
The radio report stated that a human body had allegedly been found inside the craft, which had glass windows. The person was reportedly wearing a heavy suit covered with mysterious symbols.
The news caused a stir, prompting the US Embassy in Rio de Janeiro to send inquiries to the State Department, the US Department of Defense, and NASA to determine what had happened.
Officials suspected that the object could have been a probe or a weather balloon.

Investigation results and debunking the myth
For six days, American diplomats conducted an on-site investigation. The evidence collected completely debunked the story about a craft crashing and a crew being found inside.
US Consul in El Salvador Harold Midkiff reported that the story had been fabricated in Rio de Janeiro:
Journalists and investigators who traveled to Conde found no witness who had seen the object fall.
Brazil’s Ministry of Aeronautics officially denied any reports of unusual events or unknown craft falling in the region.
The only real outcome of the episode was a report by a local journalist, which he transmitted from Conde using an old Morse code device.
