Head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, advocates for resolving the war in Ukraine through negotiations according to the failed Minsk agreements, Tagesschau reports.

"It (the war - ed.) must not end like the First World War, with hundreds of thousands dead. Therefore, it is proper to consider how to achieve a resolution through negotiations. And I believe that we can certainly take the Minsk agreements as guidance," he said.

Heusgen referred to statements by the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, according to whom a stalemate has developed on the front, similar to the Western Front in World War I.

Frontline "stalemate"

In the fall of 2023, The Economist published Zaluzhnyi's article, which mentioned that the frontline had reached a deadlock (interpreted as a "stalemate") and currently neither side can advance as they are equally technologically equipped.

Zaluzhnyi noted that the war is entering a new stage - "trench warfare", characterized by exhausting battles. He proposed his own way out of the situation. In particular, the general believes that a powerful technological leap is needed to break the deadlock.

At the same time, this statement was sharply criticized by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who in November stated that the situation was not a stalemate, but the advancement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was slow because Ukraine values its soldiers.
