What to drink in winter: classic mulled wine or trendier warming cocktails – grog, hot Aperol, glögg, and more? Annual trends often offer new and premium alternatives, but is it worth upgrading the classics?
Famous Ukrainian sommelier Alina Pukhalska named the winning drink of this winter.
Why mulled wine remains relevant
According to the expert who worked with the largest wine list in Ukraine, mulled wine remains one of the most enduring winter symbols, regardless of the fashion trends that appear each year.
Pukhalska believes that this drink still retains its relevance today and does not require any costly alternatives. Properly prepared mulled wine is a self-sufficient drink that perfectly preserves both atmosphere and flavor.
Replacing mulled wine with premium cocktails is not necessary, Pukhalska notes.
Secret to perfect mulled wine flavor – simplicity
The sommelier emphasizes that the key to truly high-quality mulled wine is its simplicity. The base should be a dry red wine without excessive sweetness, as the amount of sugar or honey is better controlled individually, adjusting the taste to the mood.
Spices are also an important part. The expert advises not to forget about oranges, which add fruity freshness, and a basic set of spices: cinnamon, cloves, and even bay leaf, which gives the drink a distinctive aroma.
The specialist also recommends avoiding premium wines, as there is no need for them.
Basic dry varieties work best because they preserve the drink’s natural character without overcomplicating it.
Winter trends: classic without creativity
In the 2025/2026 season, mulled wine returns in a pure classic format – without excessive creativity but with proper attention to detail.
It remains a drink that creates warmth not through ingredients but through its traditional character. That is why, Pukhalska notes, replacing it with premium cocktails is not necessary.
