Most Ukrainians expect long war, but 61% are ready to endure as long as needed

Most Ukrainians believe the war may not end before the second half of 2027. At the same time, 60% of respondents are prepared to endure for as long as necessary, according to the results of a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
According to the survey results, only 21% of Ukrainians expect the war to end by the end of this year. Another 15% expect the war to end by the first half of 2027.
Meanwhile, 45% expect the war to end either in the second half of 2027 or later. As before, a significant share (19%) have no definite opinion on the issue.
Thus, Ukrainians generally expect the war to continue for a long time.

Since the beginning of 2026, the share of those prepared to endure the war for as long as necessary has declined, from 65% in January to 48% in April.
At the same time, between April and July-August, the figure returned to nearly its previous level. Currently, 61% say they are prepared to endure for as long as necessary.

Meanwhile, 20% of respondents now name a shorter period of time — from several months to six months — compared with 29% in April.
Compared with April, all regions have seen a trend toward an increase in the share of those prepared to endure for as long as necessary. In Kyiv, in particular, the figure rose from 61% in April to 69% now, against the backdrop of an intense campaign of strikes on the capital.
The results of a July survey showed that most Ukrainians continue to believe in victory in the war, although opinions on the country's future borders were divided.
According to the latest survey, six in ten Ukrainians consider handing over the entire Donbas to Russian control in exchange for security guarantees categorically unacceptable.
