Moldovan farmers threaten mass protests over decision on Ukraine

The ultimatum was issued by Moldova’s farmers’ association Forța Fermierilor (Farmers’ Force).
According to the association’s head, Alexandru Slusari, he has already met with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan. The main topic of the meeting was farmers’ concerns about discounted rail transit for Ukrainian cargo.
Against this backdrop, Slusari recalled the situation in 2022-2023, when poorly organized transit of goods from the neighboring country blocked exports of Moldovan products.
"Moldovan farmers had to sell their products for much less than the cost of production. We cannot allow our exports to be put at risk because of logistical or customs problems," the head of the association said.
He also explained that farmers are currently seeking to be involved in discussions on how Ukrainian cargo transit is organized.
The association has already set a deadline for the Moldovan government: August 21. If the government does not respond, the farmers say they will launch large-scale protests.
What did Ukraine and Moldova agree on?
On August 12, it became known that Kyiv and Chisinau had reached an important agreement on a 50% discount on rail transit for Ukrainian cargo.
The agreement was reached during talks between Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi and Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.
According to the Ukrainian prime minister, the new arrangement took effect on August 10, 2026.
Koretskyi also said the decision is important for Ukrainian exporters amid Russian attacks in the Black Sea.
