Moldova's Prime Minister resigns: first details

According to the Prime Minister, his term in office will end on July 3.

"The moment I realize that I can no longer fulfill my duties in accordance with my principles and convictions, I choose to step down," Munteanu states.

Moldova’s President Maia Sandu has already commented on the Prime Minister’s decision to resign.

The country’s leader assures that she has never had any conflicts with Munteanu. Sandu also adds that no one had hindered his work.

Munteanu was elected head of the Moldovan government last fall. He lived in Ukraine for over 20 years but moved away when the war began.

Corruption scandals in Moldova

In May 2026, journalists from the publication ZdG discovered that Dumitru Vangeli, head of the state-owned civil aviation safety enterprise MoldATSA, had used a forged college diploma as well as a fake pilot’s license. He was subsequently fired.

Amid this scandal, Roman Cojuhari, director of the Public Property Agency, also resigned. As it turned out, it was his agency that had allowed Vangeli to win the competition despite his forged documents.

Anastasia Taburceanu, the cousin of the President of Moldova, who worked at MOLDATSA as a communications specialist, also left her position.

Following media reports that she had been hired without a competitive selection process and was earning about 75,000 lei per month (approximately 193,000 hryvnia), the amount of her salary sparked widespread public outcry. Taburchanu assured the public that she would return the funds she had received.

Furthermore, on July 2, law enforcement officials detained Tatiana Nistorica, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture. She is suspected of accepting a bribe.

Maia Sandu plans to address the Transnistria issue during negotiations regarding Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the process of obtaining citizenship will be simplified for Ukrainians in Moldova.

Ukraine recently extended the transport visa-free regime with Moldova for several more years.
