Moldova offered to buy gas for Transnistria at its own expense
Transnistria has faced major problems due to the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. However, back in December, Moldova offered to buy European gas for the region, at its own expense, wrote the State Secretary for Energy of Moldova, Constantin Borosan, on his Facebook account.
He said that to avoid the current situation in Transnistria, the Moldovan state offered the region alternative solutions last month in case gas supplies from Russia were cut off.
“Back at the meeting of December 11, 2024, on the platform of the Ministry of Energy with energy companies, including those from the left bank of the Dniester, it was proposed to Tiraspoltransgaz to consider the possibility of purchasing natural gas on the BRM exchange as an alternative in the event of a supply interruption from Gazprom,” the statement said.
Additionally, at a meeting on December 20, 2024, with the participation of energy companies, including Tiraspoltransgaz, Transnistria was offered a mechanism for cooperation by purchasing natural gas from the Moldovan supplier Energocom and processing it into electricity. However, to date, Moldova has not received any response to this proposal.
“On January 2, 2025, Moldovagaz and Energocom offered Tiraspoltransgaz a working mechanism for the purchase of natural gas in regional markets. On December 31, 2024, the transit route through the Trans-Balkan corridor and the purchase on the gas exchange in Bulgaria were successfully tested,” Borosan writes.
He adds that on the same day, January 2, Tiraspoltransgaz abandoned this form of cooperation.
What problems did Transnistria face?
After Russian gas supplies were cut off on January 1, heating and hot water were cut off in Transnistria.
Yesterday it became known that the power plant, which generates electricity for the region using gas or coal, will only have enough stocks of the second component until the end of January. Earlier it was stated that the stocks would last for 50 days.
Also yesterday, one of the regions of Tiraspol already experienced a water cutoff. Today, Moldova warned that due to a decrease in pressure in the network, which is possible during rolling blackouts, the upper floors of high-rise buildings in Bender and Tiraspol may be left without water.
