Moldova and Russia can improve their relations even if a dictator like Vladimir Putin remains in power in the Kremlin, states President of Moldova Maia Sandu, according to NewsMaker.

She mentions that Russia needs to change its approach towards Moldova and its citizens.

"We support friendly relations and cooperation with all countries that respect the interests of our citizens. This is our starting point and the fundamental principle of foreign policy. All countries that respect the interests of our country, that respect Moldovan citizens, are friendly countries and our partners," she states.

Russia doesn't respect Moldova

However, Sandu clarifies that Russia is blackmailing the country, threatening it every two days and keeping its troops on Moldovan territory. Therefore, in such a situation, talking about friendly relations is not feasible.

"When Russia changes its attitude towards Moldova and its citizens, it will be easier for us to restore these relations," says the Moldovan president.

At the same time, journalists asked her about the future relations between Moldova and Russia even if Putin wins the presidential elections in 2024. Sandu also allows for a change in relations under those conditions.

Russian impact on Moldova

Previously, the pro-Russian Shor party in Moldova organized protests to overthrow the current government and demanded the impeachment of President Maia Sandu. In June 2023, the Constitutional Court of Moldova banned the Shor party's activities.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that Russia was buying voters in local elections held in November.

Furthermore, Chisinau is trying to combat Russian propaganda. In October 2023, Moldova blocked access to 22 Russian propaganda TV channels.
