Moldova begins first gas supplies to Transnistria

Moldova officially began its first gas deliveries to Transnistria on loan. The supplies started on the morning of February 1, reports Radio Free Europe.
Vadim Cheban, acting director of Moldovagaz, noted that the gas deliveries started at 8:30 AM. The gas is being pumped into the pipeline system on the left bank of the Dniester River, with volumes sufficient "to maintain pressure."
According to him, the gas currently flowing to Transnistria is already in the pipelines within Moldova's territory. In other words, these are not new purchases made by the government on the European market.
"Gas is being supplied at the points where the system, managed by Tiraspoltransgaz, connects," Cheban said.
Energy crisis in Moldova
An energy crisis in the unrecognized Transnistria began after Ukraine halted the transit of Russian gas to Europe and Moldova on January 1, 2025. As a result, the region stopped receiving gas from Russia.
Ukraine has expressed readiness to assist with the problem in Transnistria. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine could provide coal and send specialists to the Moldova DRES, which, according to him, could generate ten times more electricity.
Zelenskyy suggested that Ukraine could receive surplus electricity in exchange for its assistance to Transnistria.
Moldova and the authorities of unrecognized Transnistria signed an agreement on a gas loan, under which Chisinau will provide Tiraspol with a loan of 3 million cubic meters of natural gas.
