Ukraine ready to help Moldova with coal and electricity production - Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, stated that Ukraine is ready to supply coal to Moldova to help it overcome the energy crisis. Additionally, Ukraine can send its specialists to the Moldovan Thermal Power Plant (TPP) to increase electricity production.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine can provide coal to Moldova, including deliveries to the unrecognized Transnistria for electricity production. He added that Russia had supplied anthracite to Transnistria, which it had stolen from Ukraine’s occupied territories.
The president explained that the Moldovan TPP can increase its electricity production tenfold — from 220 megawatts to 2 gigawatts. He emphasized that Ukraine is ready to send its specialists to Transnistria.
"If our people go there, it will definitely be able to produce 2 gigawatts. That is ten times more and more than what is needed. If we provide them with coal at a low price, or even free of charge, then in return for this coal, we can receive electricity. This is fair: we give coal, they get electricity for themselves, for all of Moldova, and we get electricity for ourselves," Zelenskyy said.
He added that through cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova, the entire country of Moldova can be supplied with electricity, and electricity prices can be reduced across the territory by 30%.
"I have a letter from Tiraspol from Mr. Krasnoselsky (the so-called president of Transnistria). I consider the letter vague. They’ve sent similar letters to other countries. I believe that if Tiraspol's officials continue waiting for mercy from Moscow, instead of providing electricity to the people, their letters are just attempts to shift responsibility for people’s suffering," the president noted.
According to him, Ukraine and Moldova can jointly ensure stable electricity production for the next 10 years. The parties agreed to delegate the relevant decisions to their respective teams.
Energy crisis in Transnistria
Since January 1, Ukraine has stopped the transit of Russian gas to Europe and Moldova. The unrecognized Transnistria has ceased receiving gas from Russia, leading to an energy crisis.
The local Moldovan Thermal Power Plant (TPP) continues to operate on reserves of fuel oil and coal. However, these reserves may soon be depleted. The TPP also supplies electricity to Chișinău.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready to assist in resolving the energy crisis in Transnistria.
However, the so-called authorities of the Russian-occupied region have refused this assistance. Media reports indicate that Russia plans to purchase gas in Europe for Transnistria.
