Mobilization in Ukraine: Men living abroad may be called up for military service
Concsript Ukrainian citizens who live abroad may be called up to the army. Such scenarios are being discussed in Ukraine, according to Ukraine's Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov in an interview with Welt and Bild.
Umerov suggested that next year, men living abroad could be called up for military service. Ukrainian men of conscription age, between 25 and 60, in Germany and other countries may be asked to appear at the conscription points of the Armed Forces.
The Minister of Defense only talked about invitations, but, Umerov hinted that there could be sanctions if the request is not complied with.
"We are still discussing what will happen if they do not come voluntarily," Welt quotes Umerov.
The head of the Ministry of Defense emphasized the importance of fairness in the mobilization issue. It is crucial how the military will be trained and equipped, where and when they will serve, and when they will be demobilized. According to Umerov, there will also be options for recruits based on their abilities.
"We want fairness for everyone because it concerns our own country. We will send them invitations," he added.
The Minister of Defense indicated that he does not sympathize with those who refuse military service on conscientious grounds: "This is not punishment for defending your country and serving the country. It is an honor."
From February 24, 2022, 221,571 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 arrived in Germany. 189,484 of them are currently in the country.
