Former US first lady Michelle Obama stated that the US political system contains deep sexism, which hinders women from running for the highest offices, according to The Hill.

Her appearance took place on Friday, 14 November, as part of the presentation of her new book titled The Light We Carry (Ukrainian title: Погляд) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Michelle Obama emphasized that society continues to judge women in politics primarily by appearance rather than leadership qualities, and this, in her view, prevents the country from moving forward.

"As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready," she told the audience.

"That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not," Michelle Obama added, responding to regular calls for her to run for president.

In a conversation with actor Tracee Ellis Ross, the former first lady explained that her experience in the White House was marked by constant criticism of her appearance, from clothing choices to her hairstyle. That is why she decided to elaborate on this experience in her book.

In the book, Obama examines the role of appearance in women’s political life and stresses that stereotypes and bias in America remain extremely strong.

"You know, we’ve got a lot of growing up to do, and there’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it," she said.

Michelle Obama’s comments came amid the political consequences of Kamala Harris’ loss in the 2024 presidential election, where she was defeated by Donald Trump.

In a post on Facebook, Michelle Obama highlighted that she now seeks to "reclaim my own narrative" and tell the story of her path as the first Black woman to serve as first lady.

She wrote that she was grateful to be at a stage in her life where she could fully express herself, wear what she loved, and do what felt authentic to her.

Obama’s remarks have already sparked wide resonance in the US, while her book continues to fuel discussion about the role of women in politics and society.

Kamala Harris announced a political pause in August this year, saying that she "does not want to return to a broken system."

It was also previously reported that Donald Trump cancelled Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris.
