MFA responds to Biden's comment on Ukraine's optional NATO membership
Ukraine's membership in NATO is a historical fact. When this moment comes, the process should take a matter of weeks, says Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in an interview with Ukrinform.NATOization
Kuleba commented on US President Joe Biden's statement that Ukraine's membership in NATO is optional. The Foreign Minister stresses that Ukraine is grateful to the United States and Biden for their support.
"As for Ukraine's membership in NATO, I am convinced this is a historical fact. Ukraine will be in the Alliance because in today's world, it is simply impossible to imagine the security of the Euro-Atlantic community without Ukraine and our army. Whether someone likes it or not, this is the reality,” he said.
Ukraine's accession to NATO is a matter of a window of opportunity, and Ukrainians are waiting for this historic moment, according to Kuleba.
“When it comes, Ukraine's accession to NATO should take a matter of weeks, not months or years,” the minister added.
What Biden said
Recently, US President Joe Biden said that Russia must be prevented from attacking Ukraine again and occupying Ukrainian territories. According to Biden, it does not necessarily imply Ukraine's accession to NATO.
He also reminded that he opposed the NATOization of Ukraine.
NATO explained Biden's words, reminding that the United States supports Ukraine's path to membership in the Alliance.
