Meta’s new AI app Muse has shown stronger results in its first 12 days after launch than ChatGPT did during the same period following its debut. The new service has already topped download rankings, according to analysts at Apptopia.

Record download figures

According to analysts, an accurate comparison of the two apps’ initial performance was complicated for a long time by differences in their launch strategies.

OpenAI initially released the mobile version of ChatGPT in many countries around the world, but exclusively for iOS.

Meanwhile, Meta launched Muse on both iOS and Android, but limited access to the US and Canadian markets.

To level the playing field for the comparison, Apptopia specialists analyzed iOS download figures in the US and Canada during the first 12 days after the launch of each service:

  • Muse recorded 1.8 million iOS downloads during its first 12 days.

  • ChatGPT recorded 1.3 million downloads on Apple’s App Store during the same period.

  • The total number of Muse installs across both platforms worldwide has already reached 2.8 million.

  • Thanks to its rapid growth in popularity, Muse rose from second place to the top spot in the US App Store, pushing ChatGPT lower in the rankings.

Does user activity make a difference?

Analysts also recorded higher levels of audience engagement. A comparison of daily active mobile users in the US showed a significant lead for Meta’s app over OpenAI’s figures at the same stage of its launch.

In the US, the number of daily active Muse users reached 642,000, while ChatGPT had only 231,000 daily active users on its 12th day after launch.

Even when the sample is narrowed exclusively to iOS, Muse continues to lead with 359,000 daily active users compared with its competitor’s figure during the same period.

Promotion strategy and the Meta ecosystem

Experts explain Muse’s rapid growth by pointing to the proven cross-promotion strategy Meta previously used when launching Threads.

Integrating AI tools into the company’s largest platforms allows Meta to reach a ready-made audience of millions without additional advertising costs.

The Muse AI app is closely integrated into the Meta ecosystem and works within Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

According to Apptopia, more than 95 percent of Muse users already have an active Facebook account, while 63 percent are regular Instagram users.

Meta itself has so far refrained from publishing official internal data on the number of users of its new service.
