A meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not take place, despite all the promises Putin made to US President Donald Trump, said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a briefing with French President Emmanuel Macron.

According to Burkhard, Merz made the statement in Fort Brégançon during a joint press briefing with Macron.

"A meeting between President Zelensky and President Putin will apparently not happen, despite the agreement reached between President Trump and President Putin last week," the German Chancellor said.

Zelenskyy-Putin meeting: what is known

On August 15, US President Donald Trump met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The American leader emphasized that one of his goals was to organize a trilateral meeting that would also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, a week later, Trump acknowledged that Putin does not want to meet with Zelenskyy because he doesn’t like him. Zelenskyy himself has repeatedly stated publicly that Russia is sending negative signals regarding meetings and the future course of events.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that during current negotiations on ending the war, Russian leader Vladimir Putin deliberately makes demands that are impossible to accept. These requirements are unrealistic.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney believes that Putin is afraid to meet with Zelenskyy to discuss the conditions for ending the war.
