Media uncovers details of EU's new migration plan: What is known
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has presented a new ten-point EU plan to combat illegal migration. It also includes changes for Ukrainians, RMF FM reports.
In a letter to the heads of state and governments of EU countries, Ursula von der Leyen announced "innovative ways" to combat illegal migration. One key point involves the creation of centers outside the European Union for migrants who do not qualify for asylum.
This is reportedly the first time the European Commission has welcomed a proposal supported by countries like Poland. Italy is already organizing such centers in Albania.
The President of the European Commission also announced new rules to improve the efficiency of the return of migrants who do not qualify for asylum to their home countries.
Von der Leyen pointed out that one of the first tasks of the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration is to address hybrid attacks from Russia and Belarus. This includes agreements with airlines flying to Minsk and stricter visa policies.
In addition, new rules will regulate the long-term stay of refugees from Ukraine, though specific changes have not yet been disclosed.
Migration will be one of the main topics at the two-day EU summit of heads of state and government in Brussels, which will begin on October 17.
It was previously reported that Poland plans to suspend the right to asylum for refugees arriving from Belarus.
