Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna died in a detention facility in the Russian city of Kizel, located in the Perm region of Russia, according to Slidstvo.Info.

The outlet, citing data from the Office of the Prosecutor General, reported that Roshchyna died on September 19, 2024. This date was also listed on the death certificate issued by the Leninsky Department of the Civil Registry Office of the city of Perm.

Taras Semkiv, head of the Second Department of the Office for Combating Crimes Committed in the Context of Armed Conflict at the Prosecutor General’s Office, stated that the Ukrainian journalist had been held in the Kizel detention facility for less than two weeks, where her death occurred. Investigators are currently determining all the circumstances surrounding her death.

It was previously known that Roshchyna was initially held in occupied territories and later transferred to the Taganrog detention facility in the Rostov region. Until now, the exact location of her death had remained unknown.

What the released soldiers say

Journalists spoke with a released serviceman, Danylo, who said that Roshchyna was transferred from Taganrog to Kizel eight days before her death. He noted that he traveled with her on the same train.

"She could barely walk; they had to take her to the toilet. She was extremely thin, just bones," the serviceman recalled.

Danylo specified that the transfer took place from September 9 to 11. New arrivals at the detention facility were subjected to torture.

"They would beat me continuously for an hour or two, give me a minute to rest, and then start again. I lost consciousness twice during the 'inspection.' Women were shaved bald, and you could hear them crying," he said.

According to Danylo, in the Kizel detention facility, the mayor of Dniprorudne in Zaporizhzhia region, Yevhen Matveiev, was beaten to death.

Another released defender noted that prisoners in the facility were forbidden from moving around the cell or sitting. They were not allowed to communicate with each other and were forced to listen to Russian songs and lectures presenting a distorted version of Russian and Ukrainian history.
