Matiukha Foundation: modern equipment for Okhmatdyt already in use

In April 2025, a new Thompson retractor system for emergency surgery was delivered to the National Specialized Children's Hospital "Okhmatdyt." This system allows surgeons to operate freely without being distracted by technical limitations
The equipment transfer became possible thanks to an initiative supported by Andriy Matiukha. The system cost UAH 2.22 million.
The Emergency Surgery Department at Okhmatdyt operates around the clock, seven days a week, providing medical assistance to children from all regions of Ukraine. Each year, the department performs over 300 surgical procedures using this advanced retractor system.
Andriy Matiukha emphasizes that the primary goal is to create the right conditions for doctors to work effectively.
Thompson is a high-precision retractor system that allows surgeons to secure the surgical field while keeping their hands free and ensuring better visibility. This is particularly crucial in pediatric surgery, where precision and speed are especially important.
The system is used in:
-
abdominal surgery
-
thoracic surgery
-
neurosurgery
-
orthopedics
-
oncological surgery
It helps reduce the duration of surgeries, lowers physical strain on doctors, and minimizes the risk of tissue damage.
For the Andriy Matiukha Foundation, this is an example of tangible aid that directly improves the quality of care.
Doctors noticed immediate positive changes after the system was introduced. Complex surgeries became technically easier, and patients experienced faster postoperative recovery. The number of complications has decreased. At Okhmatdyt, the team notes that the new system has improved surgical visibility, reduced the physical workload on the surgical team, shortened the duration of procedures, and made the environment safer for both patients and staff.
The transfer of the Thompson retractor system is just one link in a broader, consistent effort. In May 2025, two more projects were implemented as part of the same initiative. The first was the opening of the international art installation ORIGAMI for UKRAINE. The second involved financial assistance to families affected by a missile strike on Kryvyi Rih. A total of UAH 1 million was allocated for these needs.
The delivery of equipment to Okhmatdyt is not an isolated case but an example of a systemic approach. The focus is on the long-term impact of support that enables the modernization of medical facilities, improves working conditions for healthcare professionals, and provides a safer treatment environment for patients. This approach lays the foundation for real change in the healthcare sector.
