A large-scale rally in support of Czech President Petr Pavel took place in Prague, drawing tens of thousands of participants amid a conflict between the head of state and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, according to IDNES.
Organizers estimate that between 80,000 and 90,000 people took part in the demonstration, filling Prague’s main squares. The rally was organized by the civic movement Milion chvilek pro demokracii (“A Million Moments for Democracy”) in support of Pavel and democratic values.
Participants chanted slogans backing the president, waved Czech, EU, and Ukrainian flags, and watched speeches by speakers broadcast on large screens. The demonstrators spoke out against political pressure and sought to show solidarity with the head of state.
The decision to hold the rally was linked to a conflict between Pavel and the right wing of the government, particularly Foreign Minister Petr Macinka and the Motoristé party, which have faced criticism over controversial political positions. The president refused to approve the appointment of a certain minister, triggering a sharp reaction within the ruling coalition.
The government led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has already voiced support for citizens’ right to peaceful assembly, while urging all participants to adhere to democratic procedures and respect election results.
The rally’s organizers announced the possibility of even larger demonstrations, including a signature campaign in support of the president, and also called on the public to back future protest initiatives in support of Ukraine.
Several days ago, a scandal erupted in Czechia between President Petr Pavel and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, sparked by disagreements over the appointment of a minister.
It was also previously reported that Pavel recently clashed with the government over the possible transfer of L-159 training-combat aircraft to Ukraine. Earlier, Pavel said such a transfer was possible and that the aircraft could be effective in combating drones.
