Man attacked pedestrians with knife in Paris: Casualties reported
At one of the railway stations in Paris, an African man attacked passersby with a knife. As a result of the attack, one person died, and two others were injured. Law enforcement authorities are ruling out terrorist motives for the attacker, according to France 24.
The assailant initiated the attack at 7:35 am local time (05:35 Kyiv time) at the station servicing domestic trains and trains heading to Switzerland and Italy.
The Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, stated that as a result of the attack, one person suffered life-threatening injuries to the abdomen, while two others sustained minor injuries. Another individual experienced a sharp stress reaction after witnessing the assault.
According to Nuñez, the suspect is a citizen of Mali who voluntarily informed the police about suffering from psychological problems and carrying medication.
He presented Italian driver's license to the police, indicating his date of birth as January 1, 1992. His Italian documents were in order - he had been legally residing in the country since 2016 and had no criminal record.
"The suspect did not cry out (any religious slogans) during his attack," police sources reported.
Paris prosecutors said the suspect might have used a knife and a hammer that were under analysis.
The questioning of the suspect was halted due to his incompatible mental state, and he was placed in custody for psychiatric assistance.
The stabbing took place less than six months before Paris hosts the 2024 Olympics and an expected 15 million visitors.
