A majority of Americans view Donald Trump as a "dangerous dictator" who poses a threat to democracy. They believe the president has already exceeded his authority, Axios reports.

The poll, released April 29, on Trump's 100th day in office, is the latest sign that he is losing support for his immigration and economic policies, two issues that largely helped him win the presidency.

According to the poll by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), only four in 10 Americans expressed a favorable view of Trump after his first 100 days in office.

And 52 percent agreed that Trump "is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy," the poll said.

Americans’ discontent

The poll found the most dissatisfaction with Trump’s efforts to carry out mass deportations, impose sweeping tariffs, tighten control over universities, and fire or lay off more than 100,000 federal employees.

"Most Americans view Trump in dictatorial terms, and I think most Americans are concerned that American democracy is on the line," PRRI CEO Melissa Deckman told Axios.

On the other hand, 81% of Republicans surveyed said they still believe "Trump is a strong leader who should be given the power he needs to restore America's greatness."

The poll was conducted from February 28 to March 20. The poll is based on a representative sample of 5,025 adults who are part of Ipsos’ Knowledge Panel. The margin of error is +/- 1.69 percentage points.

Trump's ratings

In February, Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "dictator without elections."

However, a week later, he had no memory of it. "Did I say that? I can't believe I said that," Trump said.

Trump also claimed that Zelenskyy's approval rating in Ukraine was 4%, although in reality it was about 50%, and after Trump's words, it rose even more.

Trump's rating fell to a record low of 39%.
