Sleep experts on TikTok explain why you should not sleep in a warm room.
Why shouldn't you sleep in a warm room
According to sleep experts, sleeping with the heating on can actually be harmful to your health, and a general practitioner states that there are even some long-term health risks that you might not expect from such sleep.
Sleep expert Martin Sealy explained that sleeping with the heating on can worsen the overall quality of your rest, as it interferes with your sleep cycle.
"Your body temperature naturally drops as you fall asleep, allowing you to enter deeper, restorative phases of sleep. Sleeping in a heated room disrupts this process, making you toss and turn. The result? Poor sleep, leaving you feeling sluggish and irritable the next day," he said.
Heating systems can also dry out the air around you, and during sleep, this can lead to dehydration and irritation of the airways.
You may notice symptoms such as a dry throat, chapped lips, irritated skin, discomfort in your sinuses, or a worsening of allergies.
Other issues caused by sleeping with the heating on include accelerated skin aging due to dehydration and even an increased risk of waking up feeling tired, as your body struggles to regulate its temperature.
Other effects of sleeping in a warm room
There are also long-term health issues that may arise from regularly sleeping with the heating on.
These can include chronic sleep disturbances, a weakened immune system, cardiovascular stress, and metabolic issues.
If you still find it difficult to sleep in a cool room, there are things you can do to help warm up. Investing in thermal technologies, such as heat-retaining pajamas or socks, will help keep your body warm without overheating the entire bedroom.
You can also place a hot water bottle in your bed before lying down to warm up the sheets in advance, and drinking a caffeine-free hot beverage before bed can raise your internal temperature to make you feel more comfortable.
