Solar activity periodically increases in March, which can trigger geomagnetic disturbances on Earth. In the coming days, several waves of magnetic storms of varying intensity are expected.

RBC-Ukraine explains when magnetic storms are expected from March 9 to 13, how strong they may be, and how they can affect people's well-being.

When magnetic storms expected March 9-13

According to preliminary forecasts from space weather services, several days of increased geomagnetic activity are possible during this period.

March 9, Monday - weak geomagnetic fluctuations (Kp index around 3)

March 10, Tuesday - possible magnetic storm (Kp index up to 5)

March 11, Wednesday - geomagnetic activity expected to decline (Kp index 3)

March 12, Thursday - increase again and warning of magnetic storm (Kp index 4-5)

March 13, Friday - decline in geomagnetic activity (Kp index 3)

Experts emphasize that such forecasts may change, since solar activity is highly variable and the space weather situation can shift even within a single day.

What magnetic storm is

Magnetic storms are disturbances in Earth's magnetic field caused by solar flares and streams of solar wind. When charged particles reach our planet, they may temporarily affect the nervous and cardiovascular systems.

The intensity of such fluctuations is measured using the Kp index:

Kp 0-2 - calm period

Kp 3-4 - moderate fluctuations

Kp 5 and above - magnetic storm

Even moderate disturbances are often felt by people with chronic diseases or increased weather sensitivity.

How magnetic storms affect body

During periods of increased geomagnetic activity, some people may notice changes in well-being. Most common complaints include:

  • Headache;
  • Fatigue and sleepiness;
  • Reduced concentration;
  • Blood pressure fluctuations;
  • Irritability or worsening mood;

Who most affected by magnetic storms

Changes in the magnetic field are most often felt by:

  • People with cardiovascular diseases;
  • People with high or low blood pressure;
  • Weather-sensitive individuals;
  • Elderly people;
  • Those with sleep problems or chronic fatigue;
  • People experiencing prolonged stress;

How to ease symptoms during magnetic storms

Doctors advise following simple rules on days of increased geomagnetic activity:

  • Sleep at least 7-8 hours;
  • Drink enough water;
  • Avoid overwork and stress;
  • Limit alcohol and strong coffee;
  • Spend more time outdoors;
  • Choose lighter meals.

If strong symptoms appear or well-being worsens, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

Scientists also note that the impact of magnetic storms on human health is still being actively studied, and most geomagnetic fluctuations pass almost unnoticed.
