Magnetic storms in May: Days when your well-being is at risk

May will bring not only long-awaited warmth but also serious challenges from magnetic storms. Scientists warn about geomagnetic storms that can significantly affect health and well-being. Here is what you should know about magnetic storms, when to expect the most dangerous days, and how to protect yourself.
What is magnetic storm?
A magnetic storm is a disturbance in the Earth's magnetic field caused by solar flares. During such flares, a huge number of charged particles are released into space, which, upon reaching the Earth, interact with its magnetosphere.
The consequences of these processes are felt not only in space: magnetic storms affect the operation of satellites, electronics, and most importantly, human well-being.
Calendar of dangerous dates in May 2025
According to forecasts by NOAA and other scientific space weather centers, several periods of increased magnetic activity are expected in May:
May 2 – magnetic storm of red level (K-index 5)
May 5–7 – strong magnetic storm (K-index 5–6)
May 7–10 – prolonged magnetic storm, starting with moderate activity, peaking at G2 (K-index 6–7)
May 18 – short but strong magnetic storm (K-index 5–6)
May 22–23 – storm of moderate strength
May 28–30 – strong magnetic storm (G2–G3)
On these days, it is worth paying special attention to your well-being and minimizing strain.
How magnetic storm affects people
Not everyone is equally sensitive to magnetic storms, but certain symptoms are commonly encountered:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Migraine
- Nausea
- Increase or decrease in blood pressure
- General weakness
- Drowsiness
- Sleep disturbances
- Rapid fatigue
- Impaired concentration and work efficiency
- Irritability
- Apathy
- Increased emotionality
- Acute reaction to various situations
- Aggression
- Mood swings
- Exacerbation of chronic diseases
- Decreased attention span
People with cardiovascular diseases, weather sensitivity, pregnant women, and children are especially vulnerable.
How to protect yourself during magnetic storms
To minimize the impact of storms on the body, doctors and researchers recommend:
Getting enough sleep – at least 7–9 hours a day
Drinking more clean water – this helps maintain normal blood circulation
Eating properly, adding nutritious foods to your diet (vegetables, fruits)
Reducing the amount of coffee and caffeinated drinks, and avoiding energy drinks
Avoiding alcohol and harmful foods that burden the body
Avoiding stress – not planning important tasks on dangerous days
Not engaging in conflicts, avoiding arguments
Reducing screen time – electronics during storms puts extra strain on the nervous system
Avoiding heavy physical and mental exertion
Ventilating rooms well and spending more time outdoors
Monitoring blood pressure and taking medications as prescribed by a doctor
These are simple things, but they work. If your health condition causes concern, seek medical help.
Why is it important to know dangerous dates of magnetic storms
Ignoring magnetic storms can lead to worsening of chronic diseases, deterioration of well-being, and even emergencies due to loss of concentration.
For healthy people, storms can also be a source of stress that accumulates unnoticed but later manifests as a drop in immunity and energy.
Understanding the magnetic storm calendar helps to better plan important tasks, trips, physical activity, and simply avoid unnecessary risks.
