Magnetic storms coming: Critical days and how to protect yourself
Will magnetic storms affect Ukraine from January 5 to 10 (photo: Freepik)
Early January will bring not only frosty winter weather but also a period of increased solar activity. Between January 5 and 10, Earth will repeatedly come under the influence of geomagnetic disturbances of varying intensity. Days marked by sharp fluctuations in the magnetic field are traditionally the most challenging for well-being.
RBC-Ukraine explains when magnetic storms are expected between January 5 and 10, which days may be critical, and how to reduce their impact.
Detailed magnetic storm forecast for January 5–10
According to international solar activity monitoring centers, geomagnetic conditions during this period will be uneven, with surges alternating with short calm phases.
January 5–6
Moderate geomagnetic activity at Kp 4, with possible brief increases to Kp 5. On these days, weather-sensitive individuals may experience fatigue, drowsiness, and reduced concentration.
January 7–8
A relatively stable background with minor magnetic field fluctuations. These are expected to be the calmest days of the period, when overall well-being usually remains stable.
January 9–10
A new wave of magnetic storms is expected. Forecast levels are Kp 5–6 (red level). These days are considered the most challenging, with possible spikes in blood pressure, headaches, sleep disturbances, and emotional instability.
What magnetic storms are and why they are dangerous
Magnetic storms are disturbances of Earth’s magnetic field caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Streams of charged particles affect not only communication and navigation systems but also physiological processes in the human body.
The most sensitive systems are:
-
The cardiovascular system;
-
The nervous system;
-
Hormonal balance;
Who will feel magnetic storms the most from January 5–10
Risk groups include:
-
Weather-sensitive individuals;
-
People with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases;
-
Those suffering from chronic migraines;
-
People with sleep disorders;
-
Older adults;
-
Pregnant women;
Main symptoms during magnetic storms
Doctors warn that during periods of increased solar activity, the following symptoms may occur:
-
Headache;
-
Migraine;
-
Weakness;
-
Feeling of heavy or weak legs;
-
Dizziness;
-
Nausea;
-
Sleep disturbances;
-
Blood pressure fluctuations;
-
Pain or discomfort in the chest area;
-
Irritability
-
Anxiety;
-
Reduced concentration;
-
Worsening of chronic conditions;
What to avoid during magnetic storms
To prevent worsening symptoms, experts advise avoiding:
-
Excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption;
-
Heavy physical exertion;
-
Nighttime overexertion and lack of sleep;
-
Emotional conflicts;
-
Stopping prescribed medications without medical advice;
How to feel better: tips for January 5–10
