Magnetic storm alert: When it will peak and how to stay safe

The coming days, from August 11 to 15, will be difficult for many people on Earth. Scientists predict high geomagnetic activity, which can impact well-being, especially for those with chronic illnesses or nervous disorders. When exactly to expect peak magnetic storms, what symptoms may accompany these days, and what to do to stay healthy?
Magnetic storm forecast from August 11 to 15
According to NASA and NOAA, geomagnetic activity will rise on the morning of August 11, with a peak on August 13, and remain elevated until August 15.
August 11, Monday: Start of the active period, a red-level G1 storm (K-index 5) is expected, which may already cause the first discomfort symptoms.
August 12, Tuesday: Peak of the G1 magnetic storm (K-index 5)
August 13, Wednesday: A powerful G2 magnetic storm is expected. This is the most dangerous day, when it is better to be careful about your health.
August 14, Thursday: Activity will decrease, but magnetic disturbances will remain at a moderate level (K-index 4)
August 15, Friday: Magnetosphere will begin to calm down, with weak local magnetic storms expected (K-index 3)
What a magnetic storm is and why it affects us
Magnetic storms occur due to powerful solar flares that eject clouds of charged particles into space. After a few days, these particles reach Earth and interact with its magnetosphere, causing fluctuations in its field. This process is called a geomagnetic storm.
For most people, this influence is imperceptible, but weather-sensitive individuals and those with heart, vascular, or nervous system disorders may feel a worsening of their condition.
How to recognize the effects of a magnetic storm
Symptoms can vary, but the most common include:
- Headaches and migraines, especially in the temples and back of the head
- Blood pressure fluctuations
- Dizziness and weakness
- Sleep disturbances, like insomnia or daytime drowsiness
- Increased anxiety, irritability, and mood swings
- Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath
- Fatigue and general apathy
Particular care should be taken by the elderly, pregnant women, children, and people with chronic illnesses.
How to reduce the negative effects of magnetic storms
- Drink plenty of clean water, because sufficient hydration helps avoid headaches
- Stick to a sleep and rest schedule
- Limit coffee, alcohol, and nicotine consumption
- Avoid stress and nervous strain
- Plan important matters for more favorable days
- Spend more time outdoors, especially in the morning
- Monitor your health and take prescribed medications
Do magnetic storms affect technology?
During strong storms, there may be short-term disruptions in the operation of satellites, GPS, and mobile communications. In everyday life, this is usually not noticeable, but in aviation, energy, and the military, such situations cannot be avoided.
